Reminder to self: Look up

I've spent the last day of the International Film Festival Rotterdam watching five selected movies, some great, some not. Nonetheless, during the journey from Ecuador to Japan and Tunisia, via Denmark and Belgium, I did not twitch, nor look away, dried my eyes a couple of times and forgot everything else. What is it about movies for me? Still finding out...

All the while, I'm dreaming of Japan, and it's official, it will happen. I try to assemble my expectation with bits of reading, listening, tasting, and watching. Everything makes me idealize the country. Movie wise, I am fascinated by the elegance and simplicity of many of the characters.

In "Only yesterday", a family takes the time to gather around a table and taste a pineapple together for the first time. The odd yet absolutely lovely Tokue in "An" always looks up at the cherry blossoms and breathes in all their beauty regardless of sickness and injustice. In "Jiro dreams of sushi", we understand the passion and meaning of loving to do one thing, and doing it so well  that it defines the person and their life.

It could be so simple. Yet finding that out seems to be so hard.
